Searching - Don't Take Notes Yet

First you need to find the best sources of information to take notes from. In this stage, you'll create a list of possible sources with a rating identifying which sources are the best.

Skim through the information to get a feel for what it offers.

How to Search - Skimming

Remember, you're trying to create a list of possible sources. So, don't spend a lot of time reading at this stage. Just try to get a general idea of the type of information you'll find in this source.

  • Look at any table of contents or index for references to your topic and focus questions
  • Check the date of publication
  • Flip through and look for pictures, graphs, maps, etc.
  • Read the preface / summary / book jacket / home page
  • Read opening and closing paragraphs
  • Read topic sentences of paragraphs in articles or selected chapters
