“Every student and staff member at Huron Heights Secondary School will have an equal opportunity to learn and grow together so that we my reach our full potentials as students, teachers, administrators, and citizens. Literacy means more than just reading and writing, it includes an understanding of the way 21st century Canadian society operates, and being able to fully participate in all aspects of our democracy. A literate citizen is therefore able to navigate the various demands of our culture, including but not limited to: reading and writing (not limited to the English language), numeracy, science literacy, arts literacy, computer literacy, technological literacy, media literacy and social literacy (including historical and geographical literacy). Furthermore, there is a natural connection between a literate culture and a peaceful school, as it is assumed that students who are literate possess the language and life skills to identify problems and conflicts and resolve them effectively.”
